Nature

Phenomenon, not faction

The Rift-Born are not a faction. They are a phenomenon. They emerged from the deepest Collapse damage — regions where the Lattice didn't fracture into competing grammars but ceased to express grammar entirely. These are the Null Regions, and the Rift-Born are what exists when existence has no rules.

They are not alive in any definable sense. Not machines. Not energy beings. They are patterns of distortion — shapes in the static, figures in the noise. They move through space the way a shadow moves across a wall: present, visible, undeniably there, but not made of anything.

Every faction fears them for a different reason. The Archive fears them because they cannot be corrected — they have no state to return to. The Severed fears them because they ARE what the Underneath looks like, and it's not the liberation they promised. The Interpreters fear them because they cannot be interpreted — they resist all frameworks, not because they're complex, but because they're outside the space where frameworks operate.

Origin — No Homeworld, By Design

Never emitted

A Null Region isn't damaged geography, like Kellis Prime. It isn't refused geography, like Shar-9. It isn't multiplied geography, like Veyth Anchorage. A Null Region is geography that was never emitted — coordinates where the Lattice's grammar-generation simply stopped outputting. There is nothing to visit, because visiting requires the Lattice to first define a "there" — and in a Null Region, it never did.

The Rift-Born do not receive discrete named ship classes, unlike the three Doctrines. Naming a class would imply a doctrine, a manufacturing process, a shipwright's hand — none of which the Rift-Born have. Field pilots distinguish three by behavior alone — a pattern, repeated enough times, earns a name whether or not it deserves one:

Singularity-pattern

Thick and slow, collapsing inward at its own core — a wound the eye keeps sliding off.

Rift-Walker pattern

The fastest-rotating of the three, never holding one silhouette for two consecutive seconds.

Void-Creeper pattern

The slowest-rotating, barely distortion at all — closer to a held breath than a shape.

Behavior

3 consistent patterns

Attraction to Glyphs. Rift-Born converge on active Glyphs with behavior resembling hunger, worship, or panic — the distinction is impossible to make.

Reaction to Remnants. They behave differently around Remnants than any other presence. Sometimes they flee. Sometimes they swarm. Sometimes they form geometric patterns and hold position for hours.

The Chorus. Periodically, all Rift-Born in a region simultaneously emit an identical signal lasting exactly 22 seconds — the same as the number of known Glyphs. For those 22 seconds, every contradiction in the region resolves into a single coherent state. Then it snaps back.

Recurrences

In place of key figures

The Rift-Born do not have individuals. They have recurrences — patterns that repeat often enough to be named.

The Constant

Documented 4,000+ years

A single Rift-Born distortion observed in every known Null Region — always the same asymmetric shape, ~200 meters across. Never interacted with any ship, signal, or being. It simply persists.

The Swarm Syntax

Thousands of smaller Rift-Born

Periodically assembles into geometric shapes resembling Glyph structures. Current Interpreter thesis: it is attempting to construct a 23rd Glyph — one never completed, or deliberately destroyed.

The Mirror

Appears only near a Remnant

Takes the exact shape of the Remnant's ship, inverted. Cannot be damaged. Cannot be outrun. Disappears in faction-controlled territory.

Visual & Sound Identity

Field recognition
Color PaletteAbsence. Inverted light. Black that glows. White that absorbs. A visual feeling of "this should not be visible."
Shape LanguageImpossible geometry. Shapes with more sides than they should. Edges that don't connect but somehow enclose space.
VFX SignatureSpatial distortion. Light bends around them. No particle effects — particles are too ordered.
Sound IdentitySub-frequency pressure — felt in the chest, not the ears. Interference patterns the brain interprets as almost-words.
"you have been here. you will be here. here is not a place." Fold Breach — untranslated, pattern analysis only
